Matt Costa – “Drive”
Costa is a folkster with a penchant for experimentation, much like the previously reviewed M. Ward. Instead of going for an Americana vibe, Matt Costa’s roots come from California surf rock. Whether it’s through a high-pitched slide guitar or turning up the distortion on the bass and guitar, that beachside vibe is maintained throughout. On the other side, there’s a quiet folk element at play here that has a certain 70s vibe – think an updated version of Donovan. Costa has looped himself into Jack Johnson’s Brushfire crew, but his music stretches into worlds that are inherently unique as a whole. Matt Costa will be swinging through Austin in support of his fourth LP, Mourner’s Song, due later this year.
